Going away for Christmas? Plan Your Care Cover for an Elderly Loved One Early

Christmas will be upon us before we know it, who knows, you may already be making your festive preparations. You may even be planning to go away somewhere warm to escape the cold. If you care for an elderly relative, now is the time to start planning your holiday cover. Early planning is the most effective way to ensure peace of mind.

Home Care Options for Christmas

There are many care options available over the Christmas period, and the care you need may depend on your situation, requirements and how you currently manage the care you give. You may pop by once a week, a few times a week or every day. You may even live with them full-time. Whatever the situation, there is a care option for you.

Full-Time Christmas Care

If your relative requires round-the-clock care, you may feel that going on holiday is impossible. But at Comfort Keepers we have a live-in service whereby our trained care workers will take shifts and work around the clock to ensure your elderly relative is always cared for.

Christmas Period Respite Care & Elderly Companionship Care

Alternatively, you may simply want someone to pop in occasionally to check on your relative while you are away. This may be purely to provide companionship, or you may want a care worker to help prepare a meal, clean up the house, do the dishes, help them with bathing, or any other tasks.

There are various options for this. Respite care is care designed to be as often as you want, from a couple of hours a week to a number of longer visits. Alternatively, companion care has a focus on providing companionship for an older person. This could involve going out for a few hours, visiting the park together or sharing a meal.

Holiday Meal Options

Perhaps the only issue that you are concerned about is preparing meals. If you currently help your relative with the cooking, there are many options that can be suitable when you are not around.

For example, you could rely on our care workers to prepare the meals and eat together with your relative. Or you may want to consider a meal service that delivers hot or frozen meals to the door. There are a number of services that can even provide meals on Christmas Day.

Social Activities

Christmas is a time of year when people can feel lonely if they are on their own. Find out about local activities that your elderly relative can enjoy, not just on Christmas Day but during the weeks surrounding it. There may be clubs, special events, group meals and more where your relative can meet new people or meet up with their friends.

They may want to get to these events but cannot manage on their own. In this situation, you could use the services of a care worker to help them.

Other Ways to Help Over Christmas

There are other small ways that you can help your elderly relative to be more comfortable over the Christmas period. These could include helping with their shopping, giving them a hand with their Christmas card writing, and checking that they are comfortable and warm in their home. Even something as simple as calling them for a chat can be greatly appreciated.
